Uncharted 3 Multiplayer Details, Beta & Facebook Integration

April 18, 2011

Naughty Dog is hard at work by making Uncharted 3 the “go to” multiplayer game for the PS3.  Their first outing with multiplayer in the previous installment was fun, deep and well balanced.  Now it seems they’ve already outdone themselves.  Here’s the breakdown of features to expect:

-Multiplayer beta start July 5th (June 28th for PS+ members)

-You can now “sprint” in the game

-There will be split screen multiplayer now

-You will be able to completely customize your multiplayer characters’ appearances

-You can attack players hanging on ledges next to you

On top of these multiplayer features, they’re incorporating a Facebook “feed” so that you can see which of your friends are currently playing the game and what videos they’ve posted.  In Uncharted 2, you could record you gameplay footage, but you need a screen capture card to export the footage to your computer.  With Uncharted 3, you can export the footage directly to Facebook and Youtube.

“I don’t think anyone else has gone to that level to bring Facebook within the game.  People usually do it the other way around,” says Christophe Balestra, co-president of Naughty Dog.  “We are the first ones who are doing this.  Our goal for Facebook is to really make sure you can interact with your Facebook friends the way you interact with your PSN friends,” Balestra says.  “You can talk to them (and) you can invite them to your party.  You are going to see icons of people’s faces and their real names.  So right away it is going to feel bigger.”

Players who post their pictures and videos (90 second limit) from the game also open up another feature, earning in-game items.  The first five friends who “like” your posts will entitle you, as well as your friends, to earn a reward.  “We’re trying to create unique stories every time you play, to continue this feeling of a familiar and close-knit community, sort of like how Facebook already operates when friends upload photos and videos of their travel or parties,” he says.  “We’re not just updating your wall with basic things happening in the game,” he stated.  “If you watch a football game, you talk about it the next day because everyone watched the same game,” Balestra says.  “This is (to) get people who play to have a better experience.”  The videos with the highest rating and most views will pop-up on the bottom right corner of the screen during a pregame lobby and can be viewed while you’re waiting for your match to begin.

Naughty Dog always finds ways to bring new and exciting features to their games.  Once again, they never cease to amaze.  “Uncharted 3: Drake’s Deception” will hit store shelves 11/1/11.
