Square Enix Revives True Crime: Hong Kong Project

August 2, 2011

News

The reboot of the True Crime franchise that was being developed by United Front Games was cancelled a few months back due to Activision thinking the game “wasn’t looking good enough to their standards.”  It was a shame because it looked like it was shaping up to be a great revival for the franchise.

A surprise announcement by Square Enix was made yesterday that the game was picked up by their London Studios.   United Front Games is now being brought back up to speed to finish development of their new open-world crime thriller.  However, the title will have to be changed due to the True Crime title being owned by Activision.

I'm back...

Activision’s Eric Hirschberg, CEO of Activision Publishing told Gamasutra “Our team has worked very hard to find a solution where everybody wins. Square Enix gets the benefit of the tremendous investment we’ve made in the game thus far. UFG gets to stay together and complete their vision. And gamers get to play a great game. We couldn’t be more thrilled.”  Interestingly though, Hirshberg stated the cancellation for True Crime: Hong Kong, “To be blunt, it just wasn’t going to be good enough.”

Lee Singleton, general manager of Square Enix London Studios, stated quite the opposite however.  “When we first saw and got our hands on the game we fell in love with it…It’s one of those games where you don’t want to put the controller down; it’s what we call ‘sticky’…incredible new game engine, rich new story with deep and complex characters, and gameplay features which have simply never been at this level in an open world game” as points in its favor that made the team at Square Enix “jump all over it.”

This is certainly great news for United Front Games as their hard work will finally see the light of day.  Sound off your thoughts in the comments!
