Playstation 3 Price Drop – Bold Statement, Smart Move

August 16, 2011

Editorials, News

Viewers of GamesCom 2011’s Sony press event were sent off with some exciting news – All Playstation 3 system prices will drop by $50, globally and immediately. This includes the core 160gb system as well as the 320gb move bundle. And despite all the other announcements packed into the press event, this is, at least in this gamer’s opinion, the most poignant.

Why? Simple. Sony has had a powerful presence, especially since E3 2011, with breakthroughs not only in innovation, but providing their consumers with a total entertainment platform. Their press event at GamesCom only proves to support this claim, with their announcements for upcoming PSP Vita and PS3 titles, and even the shift of the original PSP to a value option, with a price drop to $99. And while it’s too early to draw any conclusions, it’s a fair guess that Sony will dominate GamesCom 2011 and excite guests and viewers alike, just as they did at E3. With all of this to consider, it’s obvious that Sony is at the forefront of gaming and entertainment and is providing its consumer base with some of the best experiences on current-gen consoles and handhelds.

Controlling this kind of power and innovation would make it easy for a company to rest on its laurels, knowing that sales will continue as their systems evolve with new games and technology. However, Sony has made a bold statement with its price drop to PS3 systems and PSP handhelds. And it’s a smart move, as well. Not only are they making the PS3 experience better and better for their existing consumers, but also inviting new players to enjoy everything their system has to offer. For a long time, the Xbox 360, Sony’s biggest competitor in the current-gen market, has had the upper hand at delivered a solid gaming experience at a lower price. By bringing their “core” console down to $250, Sony is helping to win over a bigger crowd, providing an affordable and complete entertainment experience. And with everything that’s coming to the PS3 over the next year, it’s never been a better time to ride the wave.

This news may excite some consumers more than others. If you’re like me, and you’ve been planning to pick up a PS3 of your own, there really couldn’t have been a better invitation than the announced price drop. The news was said to be “effective immediately” worldwide, so keep an  eye on your retailer of choice, and enjoy the savings! And, most importantly, look out for me, “Argus9Z”, coming to a friends list near you.
